Earthly Things and Heavenly Things (Hebrews 9)
Review: Last week, we looked into some of the items in the tabernacle that were “copies and shadows” of heavenly things that were actualized in the person of Jesus Christ (lampstand, table of showbread, incense, etc…..). The same could be said for the 7 major Jewish Feasts (which we’ll look into this morning). All these things back up the assertion by the writer of Hebrews that the New Covenant through the blood of Jesus Christ is superior to the Old Covenant through the blood of bulls and goats and lambs and turtle doves and…..
Review of Memory Verse: “I will put my laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God and they will be my people” (Hebrews 8:10 quoting Jeremiah 31:31)
1. How are the 7 Jewish Feast fulfilled in Jesus Christ? Which ones have been fulfilled already? Which ones are yet to come?
7 Feasts (See attachment. We’ll tackle it together):
1. Passover
2. Unleavened Bread
3. First Fruits
4. Pentecost
5. Trumpets
6. Atonement
7. Tabernacle
Now read chapter 9 and answer the following questions
1. Verse 7 describes one of the 7 feasts. Which one is it?
2. Verse 14 mentions “dead works”; what does that refer to?
3. “Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins” (Leviticus 17:11) This presents a predicament to the Jews since the temple sacrifices ceased in AD 70.
How would Galatians 1:8 and Philippians 3: 7-11 present a predicament to the Mormons? How would Isaiah 9:6, John 1:1, 1:14, and 8:58 present a predicament to Jehovah’s Witnesses? How would Romans 3:23, 6:23, and Acts 4:12 present a predicament to the Christian Scientist? How does Hebrews 9:27 present a predicament to those who believes in Reincarnation?
Memory verse: “And as it is appointed unto men to die once and then the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many” (Hebrews 9:27)
